Cboy Production has staged Ola Rotimi’s acclaimed play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, at the Adegbemile Cultural Centre in Akure, Ondo State, attracting theatre lovers, students, cultural enthusiasts and members of the state’s creative industry.
The production reinterpreted the classical Greek Oedipus story through Yoruba traditions and cultural expressions, combining drama, music, dance and traditional drumming to present the enduring themes of fate, leadership, morality and the consequences of human actions.
The performance drew enthusiastic responses from the audience, with members of the cast receiving applause for their portrayal of the characters and delivery of the dramatic narrative.
Speaking after the production, Founder and Creative Director of Cboy Production, Ayokunle Ajisafe, said the company selected Rotimi’s work because of its continued relevance to contemporary society.
According to him, the production was part of the company’s efforts to promote live theatre, educate audiences and preserve indigenous cultural expressions.
“We chose Ola Rotimi’s masterpiece because it still speaks to our society today. Our goal at Cboy Production is to bring quality theatre back to Ondo State, to educate, entertain and preserve our culture,” he said.
Chris Olufemi played Odewale, while Oyinkansola Daisi portrayed Ojuola and Steve Rotimi played Baba Fakunle. Other members of the cast included Adekunle Adewumi, Peter Oladeji, Temitope Akinjeji, Aarinola Ayeomo, Durotimi Okutagidi and Babatunde Omolafe.
The production incorporated Yoruba proverbs, traditional dance and indigenous percussion. Tolulope Adebiyi led the dance performance, while Adebisi Olubunmi Samuel, popularly known as IamKornerStone, handled the traditional drumming.
The staging was attended by notable figures from Ondo State’s entertainment and creative sectors, alongside members of the public who applauded the performers at the end of the show.
Cboy Production thanked its sponsors and partners, the management of the Ondo State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and members of the public for supporting the production.
The company said it plans to stage more theatrical productions as part of its activities aimed at sustaining live theatre and promoting cultural expression in Ondo State and the wider South-West.
