The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced two transformational digital initiatives aimed at elevating the country’s financial landscape.
They are Document Flow (DocFlow) System and the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) Naira Payment Solution.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, during a ceremony at the Bank’s headquarters in Abuja, as part of the ongoing “Digital First” transformation initiative launched by Governor Olayemi Cardoso in December 2023.
According to a press statement released on Thursday, these new digital tools are a crucial step in modernising the CBN’s operations and enhancing the overall efficiency of the Nigerian financial system.
In his address, the CBN Governor, Mr Yemi Cardoso, emphasised the remarkable potential of the DocFlow system, which aims to revolutionise document management within the Bank.
“The DocFlow system is designed to digitize operations, significantly reduce paper dependency, and streamline approval workflows. This will foster operational efficiency and enhance our overall performance,” Cardoso said, highlighting how this initiative will reduce operational bottlenecks and improve overall service delivery.
Governor Cardoso also highlighted the importance of the MDAs Naira Payment Solution, which automates cash withdrawal processes for government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. This will not only improve service delivery but also strengthen client support by increasing transparency and reducing manual errors. The Governor lauded the in-house development of both solutions, underscoring the cost savings and long-term sustainability this approach brings.
“The in-house development of these solutions demonstrates our commitment to fostering sustainability and technological advancements within the Bank. By cutting costs and streamlining operations, we are investing in a brighter future for the CBN and Nigeria’s financial ecosystem,” he added.
The Deputy Governor of Operations, Emem Usoro, praised the initiative as a major milestone in the Bank’s ongoing drive for innovation and excellence in operations. She elaborated on the benefits of the MDAs Naira Payment Solution, including enhanced service delivery, reduced errors, and strengthened safeguards against fraud. “This launch is a testament to the CBN’s determination to create more efficient, transparent, and secure financial operations across the nation,” Usoro remarked.
Mrs. Jide-Samuel, the Acting Director of the CBN’s Information Technology Department, also provided valuable insights into the development and testing phase of the MDAs Naira Payment Solution. She revealed that the solution has undergone successful trials with several MDAs, proving its reliability and alignment with the Bank’s overarching objective of “Excellence in Central Banking Operations.”
“The MDAs Naira Payment Solution is a game-changer in the CBN’s financial transaction management. It is expected to improve payment turnaround time by 70% and will play a key role in enhancing Nigeria’s financial ecosystem,” the statement further added.
With these innovations, financial analysts believe the CBN aims to reduce costs, improve service delivery and promote environmental sustainability by decreasing paper usage.
Additionally, the CBN has outlined plans to expand the use of its digital currency, eNaira, to facilitate payments into government accounts and allow MDAs to initiate vendor and beneficiary payments. This move is part of the CBN’s ongoing efforts to enhance the adoption of eNaira across both the public and private sectors.
However, the CBN has yet to disclose whether the eNaira will be integrated into the newly launched payment solution for MDAs.
