Amid Nigeria’s growing culinary culture now showcasing a wide range of cuisines from different societies, a cardiologist and other nutrition experts have listed the benefits of quality cooking oils as they relate to the good health of consumers in the country.
This was even as they have argued that the choice of cooking oil has become imperative not just for the flavour of dishes served, but also for the overall health impact on traditional and other dishes that people eat at home and in public functions.
According to an esteemed cardiologist, Dr. Monisola Adanijo, consumers should be mindful of healthy cooking oil when choosing brands for their culinary use.
“As a cardiologist, I emphasize the critical role of dietary choices in maintaining cardiovascular health. When selecting cooking oil, consumers should prioritise understanding of the dietary fat composition. This is because different cooking oils contain varying proportions of saturated fats, unsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats, each with distinct effects on cholesterol levels and overall heart health.
“Opting for oils rich in heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats, like soyabean oil, can contribute to overall cardiovascular well-being. Soybean oil is particularly valuable for its abundance of polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids,” she said.
Dr Adanijo added that essential nutrients have been linked to positive cardiovascular outcomes, making soyabean oil a favorable choice for those conscious of their heart health.
Even as experts continue to explore the benefits of good cooking oils used in Nigeria they have also not failed to inform on the health considerations associated with these culinary essentials.
They argued, therefore, that it was high time health conscious consumers began examining the considerations for the choice of cooking oils in line with the evolving culinary landscape and health-conscious choices.
According to them, from fatty acid profiles to potential benefits of providing a comprehensive view enables consumers to make informed dietary choices.
Their first observation, however, was that traditional narrative around dietary fats has evolved.
Also sharing his perspective, the Chief Marketing of TGI Group, Probal Bhattacharya, said: “The landscape of cooking oil is fast evolving with consumers showing a strong inclination towards cooking oils with healthier fat composition,” adding that Golden Terra Soya Oil contains five times more PUFA (Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids) proven to provide numerous health benefits, thereby fast becoming the brand of choice for the discerning consumer.
