Cardiologist attributes prevalence of heart-related diseases to negligence

From Felix Ikem, Nsukka

Renowned cardiologist and founder of Heart Diseases Prevention and Training Centre, Nsukka, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Dr. Camellus Ezeugwu, has attributed the prevalence of heart-related diseases to negligence and lack of information on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Ezeugwu, an assistant professor of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, United States of America, made this assertion, yesterday, during a training workshop organised for the management and staff of the hospital.

He attributed the heart-related disease to a collection of diseases and conditions that caused cardiovascular problems in the human body adding that it could be prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

He said: “Prevention is the most cost-effective and most life-saving approach to healthcare when you come to heart-related diseases and that was why it established a heart disease and training centre here in Nsukka to help residents of the area.

“The inspiration to set up this facility dated back to early 1972 as a young boy in Nsukka community when I made a decision that I will become a medical doctor in future. So with that in my memory I thought it wise to give back to them through the establishment of the hospital.

“The greatest benefit Nsukka residents and others who would access the hospital will get is the understanding of the concept of prevention. There are diseases that are quite preventable which kill a lot of people in this area, especially high blood pressure and diabetes.

“These two diseases carry with them complications that affect many aspects of the body which most times result in stroke, blindness, kidney and heart failures, among others, but could be prevented with the adequate application of medical preventive measures.

Also speaking, Dr. Francis Asogwa, a cardiologist and medical director of the hospital, said the hospital, established a year ago, had witnessed an increment in patronage, noting that it had helped in achieving the main goal of preventing heart diseases.
