Wife of Kebbi State Governor,Dr Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu has noted that Nigeria need more funding to continue in fighting Cancer to the bearest level of eradication in the country.
Bagudu who stated this while speaking with newsmen to review her roles in supporting her husband,Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu,as the Governor of the state for the past seven years,refused to score herself,but left it for the people to judge her legacy.
The founder of Medicaid, noted that, it’s required a huge Capital,budget allocation to establish cancer center,which governments have to play financial support to enable less privilege in the society to have access to the treatment which are very costly.
According to her, ” the cancer endermic require more fund to fight because there is imbalance in funding and occurrence of cancer. I do talk about it at many fora as the Governor’s wife, as the physician. My aim is to try to let the people know how to fight cancer and that is a big task. As at today,I have been able to let the people know that there is an emergency which we Nigerians, people, need to do something about urgently.
“But not all people responded. Some people believed that there are hunger in the society and hunger most be resolved before addressing cancer. So,if I have N200,000 new notes now, I mine going to give it to women whose families are in need of food or giving it out to patients who are at the final stages of cancer?
“But,we must not give up. Somehow,along the line,we would redressed the imbalance at the grassroots,we would continue to work with the government to increase the funding , preventing measures. We have successfully in some areas. We have started producing vaccine for cancer. We have gotten policy and interventions that were not there before.
“When I met President Muhammadu Buhari before going for my election at the International Cancer Union,all my requests on cancer were granted. The last one was granted few weeks ago with the Director General of Nigeria Cancer institute was apponted. Now we have one of our own as the DG of cancer institute.
“So,it’s will take awhile,but Nigeria will get there. I can say cancer is a very big problem and Nigeria is not doing enough because of the size of the population we have. I came back from Rwanda few weeks ago and I attended a programme on the invitation of Rwanda authority. It is an eyes opener because this is a small country that went through a war,a genocide but they have been able to achieve so much.
“We have to utilize partnership,creating awareness at the grassroots. Kebbi State have done well in this aspect. We have cancer clinic and experts. There are some states that don’t have cancer center. Let assumed Kebbi State could afford to establish Cancer center,with screening,drugs and treatment. How many patients could afford the medical bills? Lagos and Kano states could afford one Center, because of their commercial strength and population.
“How many patients could afford the bills in Kebbi? It is not a viable things here”.
While speaking on cashless policy,Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu expressed her sympathy to Nigerians over the pains and agony they are passing through,described the policy “as unfortunately at this period”.
She urged the people to remained calm and law abiding stressed that, Nigeria leaders would do everything to soothes their pains.
Bagudu commended the people of the state for the support given to her husband for past seven years, stressed that she would be leaving the office as the wife of the Governor not to contest for any office,but to continue to focus on howto render her service to humanity and her family well-being.
She added that she would not score herself over her performances in all sectors of lives saying” I will leave that to the people to testify my legacy”.
