Nigerians seeking to study or travel to Canada are facing longer waiting periods after Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada updated its temporary residence processing estimates.
The latest figures, updated on August 5, 2026, show that processing times for Nigerian applicants increased in two major categories between July 28 and August 5.
The estimated waiting period for a Canadian study permit rose from six weeks to seven weeks, while visitor visa processing increased from 64 days to 68 days.
However, the estimated processing time for Nigerian work permit applications remained unchanged at seven weeks.
The waiting period for super visa applications from Nigeria also increased slightly, rising from 41 days to 43 days.
Under the latest IRCC estimates, Nigerians should expect to wait about seven weeks for a work permit, seven weeks for a study permit, 68 days for a visitor visa and 43 days for a super visa.
The changes were not limited to Nigerian applicants, with some other countries recording sharper increases in temporary residence processing times.
Work permit processing for applicants from Pakistan recorded one of the largest increases, jumping from 11 weeks to 25 weeks, while study permit processing for applicants from the Philippines rose by one week.
Super visa processing for applicants from the Philippines also increased substantially, rising from 73 days to 100 days.
Some applicants recorded shorter waiting periods. The largest reduction among the categories highlighted was for super visa applications from Pakistan, which fell from 196 days to 185 days.
IRCC cautioned that its processing times are estimates and should not be interpreted as guaranteed completion dates. Actual processing periods can vary depending on the complexity of an application, the number of applications awaiting decisions, available resources and whether additional documents or information are required.
The Canadian immigration department updates temporary residence processing times weekly, meaning the estimated waiting periods for Nigerian applicants could change again.
The next update is expected around August 12, 2026.
