Former Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has described rising calls for the sacking of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle as politically motivated and unnecessary.

Sani stated this in an X post on Wednesday.

President Bola Tinubu has been under pressure to remove Matawalle following Monday’s resignation of Badaru Abubakar on health grounds.

The calls have intensified since the resurfacing of a video showing the former Zamfara governor saying not all bandits were criminals.

Reacting to the renewed calls, Sani said Matawalle has performed creditably, particularly in the handling of the Kebbi schoolgirls abduction saga, and should be appreciated rather than vilified.

He also backed the appointment of Musa as the new Defence minister.

Sani said, “With Christopher Musa taking charge of the Defence Ministry, I’m confident that he will steer the Ministry in the right direction.

“The call for the sacking of the Minister of state for Defence Matawalle, is undoubtedly politically motivated, mischievous and unnecessary.

“He commendably delivered on securing the release of the Kebbi Girls students along with others, and should be appreciated and encouraged.

“The leadership of the military and other security services are still directly responsible for battle against these criminal bandits and terrorists.”
