Mystery has enveloped a hotel along Clifford Street in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State after an unidentified woman was found dead in a hotel room, while the male guest she checked in with has gone missing.
The Cross River State Police Command said the incident was reported on September 8, 2026, at about 8:00 a.m. by the hotel director, manager and the receptionist on duty.
Preliminary findings by the Cross River State Police Command indicate that on September 7, at about 8:00 p.m., an unidentified male guest lodged in Room 2 of the hotel with a female companion.
The male guest was allegedly not properly documented at check-in.
In the early hours of September 8, the receptionist reportedly entered the room to switch off the ceiling fan, believing the occupants had checked out.
Upon switching on the light, he discovered the female guest lying unresponsive on the bed.

Investigators who visited the scene observed apparent marks of violence on the face and neck of the deceased. The body was later evacuated to the General Hospital, Calabar, where she was confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Some tablets were also recovered from the deceased’s handbag and secured as exhibits, though police have not established any link between them and the cause of death.
The receptionist has been taken into custody to assist investigators with details of the admission process and events leading to the discovery. Police stressed that his detention does not amount to a determination of guilt.
Meanwhile, the Command, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, said it has launched a manhunt for the unidentified male guest last seen with the deceased.
In his words, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Geoffrey Ordue, has directed that the investigation be conducted professionally to establish the identity of the deceased, the cause of death and the role of all persons connected to the incident.”
He urged members of the public to avoid speculation and to volunteer credible information that could help identify the deceased or locate the missing male guest.
