The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old security guard attached to a nursery and primary school in Calabar over the alleged sexual assault of a five-year-old pupil.
The arrest followed a report lodged on September 28 by the proprietress of the school, who alleged that the guard was caught taking the pupil to an uncompleted building near the school premises where the assault occurred.
The suspect, identified as Bright Bassey, 22, is currently in police custody.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, who confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, said preliminary investigation had commenced and the suspect would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Akata said the command was treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves given the age of the victim and that child-protection procedures would be followed.
He urged parents, guardians and school authorities to be vigilant and to report cases of child abuse promptly, while advising the public against sharing the identity of the child to protect her privacy.
