Organisers of the Calabar Marathon have unveiled plans for the 4th edition of the race, themed “Run with Conscience Against Poverty.”

The marathon will feature three categories — a 21.1km professional half-marathon, a 10km fun race, and a 5km charity and fitness walk.

Speaking at a press briefing in Calabar, the Managing Director of the Cross River State Tourism Bureau, Atsu John, said this year’s edition goes beyond competition.

He said the race is aimed at raising awareness on the effects of poverty and promoting responsible use of resources, while providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents nationally and internationally.

According to him, the marathon is being positioned as a world-class sporting event rooted in Cross River, capable of attracting visitors and boosting tourism.

Project Manager, Charles Adah, said organisers have introduced separate prize categories for national/international athletes and indigenous athletes.

Adah disclosed that in the national/international category, winners in both male and female divisions will receive N1.2 million, N700,000 and N400,000 for first, second and third positions respectively.

For indigenous athletes, he said prizes are pegged at N500,000, N300,000 and N200,000 for the top three finishers in both male and female categories.

He said a total of 28 prizes will be up for grabs, adding that all registered participants will receive a prize for participation.
