Nigeria is set to confront the teams from Benin Republic and Cote d’Ivoire in the group stages of the WAFU B zonal qualifiers for this year’s CAF Schools Football Championship. The qualifying tournament is taking place in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, this week.
This four-day competition will feature both male and female categories, although Nigeria is competing exclusively in the male event. Group A includes hosts Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Niger Republic, while Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, and Benin Republic form Group B.
Today, the Nigerian squad, composed of talented players from various schools that participated in the national competition in Abuja two months ago, will face off against Cote d’Ivoire at the Stade August 4 in Ouagadougou at 11am. On Tuesday, at 9am, they will battle the team from Benin Republic.
Semi-final matches are scheduled for Wednesday, followed by the loser’s final and the championship match on Thursday.
The Nigerian contingent, featuring 19 players and six officials, made their way through Lagos and Abidjan before arriving in Ouagadougou on Saturday. They are currently staying at the Hotel Splendid in the Burkinabe capital.
The players on the Nigerian team are selected from Government Basic Education School in Kaduna; Government Junior Secondary School in Jalingo; Adaigbo Secondary School in Ogwashi-Ukwu; National Grammar School in Enugu; and Ekiti Parapo College in Ido-Ekiti. The team is expertly led by Coach Oluwaseun Oyeniyi.
