The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its decision to stage the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years, returning the competition to its traditional two-year cycle.
The decision was unanimously reached at a CAF Executive Committee meeting held on Thursday.
CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, had recently disclosed at the continent’s strategy conference in Cabo Verde that the executive committee would review the decision taken last year to move AFCON to a four-year cycle.
CAF had earlier proposed introducing a new Africa Nations League to replace the biennial AFCON, with the new competition scheduled to hold every two years.
The body, however, stated that the Africa Nations League would require several years in order to be in a position to be globally competitive and self-supporting.
Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host the next edition of the AFCON scheduled for 2027.
