Somali referee Omar Artan, who was originally appointed to officiate the quarter-final of this CAN 2025 between Algeria and Nigeria, will no longer be in charge. He has been sanctioned by CAF.

On Thursday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) made the drastic decision to remove Somali referee Omar Artan after it was discovered that he was wearing boots from a brand not approved by the governing body.

This breach of contractual obligations regarding the competition’s official sponsors prompted CAF to take immediate action to protect its commercial partners.

An unexpected sanction by its very nature, this decision underscores the strict standards CAF enforces regarding officials’ gear during the final stages of the Africa Cup of Nations. Omar Artan, who had been enjoying a notable run in the tournament, now makes way for a last-minute replacement.
