C/River govt activates Rapid Response Team following outbreak of measles

From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar

The Cross River State government has activated its Rapid Response Team to immediately contain the outbreak of measles in the state.

The state commissioner for health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk disclosed this in a health advisory issued in Calabar.

The State Rapid Response Team has be activated and deployed to the affected LGAs.

In addition to this, the government disclosed that a ” Reactive vaccination for children is ongoing in the affected LGAs.

“In LGAs where there are no reported cases, the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency is intensifying routine immunization to build up herd immunity”, the government said.

The government also advised Parents and care givers to respond positively to routine immunization campaigns for their children.

The government also said symptoms especially rash and coughing in children should be reported early to the nearest health facility and strongly warned against self medication.

The state government on Friday evening confirmed the outbreak of measles in two schools in Calabar- Navy and Penniel primary schools.

This is in addition to unconfirmed cases in cases in Akpabuyo LGA which is about 15 kilometres from Calabar.

Measles is a highly contagious infection which is usually prevalent in children that have not been immunized.
