BYU-Pathway Worldwide, a global online faith-based higher education programme sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has secured recognition from the National Universities Commission (NUC) after a six-year process, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to affordable, quality higher education in Nigeria.
The recognition, announced during a special devotional held at the Ikeja Stake Centre in Lagos, is expected to strengthen the value and acceptance of BYU-Pathway qualifications in Nigeria, providing graduates with greater confidence when seeking employment, participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), or pursuing further studies, subject to the requirements of employers and relevant professional bodies.
President of BYU-Pathway Worldwide, Brian K. Ashton, expressed appreciation to the NUC for its cooperation throughout the recognition process.
“We are grateful to the NUC for recognising BYU-Pathway Worldwide. It has been six years in the process and it has been a pleasure working with everyone at the NUC. They have been very supportive,” Ashton said.
He added that the institution looks forward to serving more Nigerians by providing affordable, high-quality educational opportunities that prepare students for employment and meaningful service.
“We hope to serve the people of Nigeria and have our students participate in national service and qualify for employment opportunities based on their education,” he said.
Speaking at the event, Christian C. Chigbundu, General Authority Seventy and a member of the Africa West Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, described the recognition as a blessing that opens greater educational opportunities for Nigerians.
He said BYU-Pathway Worldwide offers more than academic qualifications by helping students develop spiritually, personally and professionally.
“Education is central to God’s plan for His children. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we should continually seek knowledge, develop our talents and strengthen our faith. BYU-Pathway helps students acquire knowledge, while becoming better disciples of the Saviour Jesus Christ,” Chigbundu said.

He noted that the programme remained one of the most affordable higher education options available in Nigeria, emphasising that its mission goes beyond financial considerations to providing life-changing opportunities through education.
Following the recognition, he said the institution would continue working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen implementation and support systems for students in Nigeria.
BYU-Pathway Africa Area Manager, Victor Ukorebi, highlighted the affordability of the programme, noting that students could earn an internationally recognised degree for about N420,000.
“With about N420,000, you can earn a degree comparable to what students receive in the United States. It is a top-quality education that opens doors to opportunities around the world while allowing students to remain in their communities,” Ukorebi said.
He described the NUC recognition as a major opportunity for Nigerians seeking accessible, affordable and globally recognised higher education.
The institution currently serves more than 27,000 students across the Africa West Area, with over 20,000 students in Nigeria, making the country its largest student population in Africa.
Through its Global Education Center in Lagos, BYU-Pathway Worldwide combines online learning with local mentoring, institute support and peer interaction, offering flexible certificate and degree programmes that equip students with practical, job-ready skills while strengthening their faith and character.
