Businesses urged to prioritise people over technology

A software expert, Toyin Arowolo, has admonished business owners to stop chasing tools but rather focus on the people who wield it.

She gave this piece of advice in her piece entitled: “Technology as an Enabler; what to know before implementing a technology solution. In her admonition, Arowolo dismantled the myth that technology alone can revolutionize operations, declaring that “technology, by itself, is powerless.”

“Technology does not solve problems without people and processes.

“Real foundation of digital success for the classic people, process, and technology (PPT) framework, emphasizes that successful technology adoption begins with well-documented, repeatable business processes.

“Technology is a device that amplifies what already exists. If your processes are broken, the result will be a digital version of that dysfunction,” she posited.

While highlighting the importance of human readiness, she described resistance to change as a natural reaction. “Even Artificial Intelligence (AI) needs to be trained by humans,” she points out, urging leaders to invest in change management strategies that include behavioural experts to help different teams adapt.

According to Arowolo, the key success factors include a team of dedicated staff who understand both the business and technology and eager to learn new innovation.

She further cautioned against being dazzled by flashy demos and marketing hype. “Start with why”, she advises.

“Clarify the business problem you are solving and be realistic about timelines. Like cooking a good meal, you cannot rush it.

“Build clarity, prepare your people, and define your processes. Only then should technology be introduced; not as a shortcut, but as a strategic pedal for growth. And therefore for organizations, contemplating digital transformation; note that the real power of technology lies not in the tool itself, but in the hands and minds of those who wield it”, she concluded.
