As Tony Onyemaechi Elumelu, billionaire investor and philanthropist, marked another year of an extraordinary life on Sunday March 22, his journey stands as one of the most remarkable stories in modern Nigerian business history. From humble beginnings in Lagos, Nigeria to becoming one of Africa’s most influential billionaires, Elumelu’s story continues to evolve —fuelled by strategic foresight, relentless ambition, resilience, and an unshakeable belief in Nigeria’s future.

From his home country, Nigeria, Elumelu has been building big businesses cutting across banking, energy, hospitality and technology, in an aggressive way. He has been creating employment and bolstering government revenue in multiple countries. As Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Transcorp Plc and UBA Plc, Elumelu’s footprints across the country, with extended hands to the rest of Africa, makes his greatness a cynosure of all eyes. His continued engagement at the highest level reflects a shared commitment to investment, enterprise development, and sustainable growth.

Beyond personal fortune, Elumelu’s vision has played a critical role in shaping Nigeria’s industrial growth trajectory. His path with powerful world leaders makes him an asset for high profile diplomacy. He was the first notable figure President Bola Tinubu visited at home immediately after winning the 2023 Presidential election. Elumelu has equally reciprocated the visit a number of times both at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and President Tinubu’s private home in Lagos. Their relationship underscores the critical role of private sector leadership in driving Nigeria’s economic transformation, advancing job creation and youth entrepreneurship —especially through initiatives like the Tony Elumelu Foundation.

As Paris continues to redefine its approach to the African continent, it was also Elumelu that the French President Emmanuel Macron recently tapped to lead the Africa-France Impact Coalition —a new forum for French political leaders and prominent African entrepreneurs designed to be a catalyst for closer private sector collaboration between France and Africa.

Elumelu has suggested that the Coalition —which will be showcased at the upcoming France-Africa Summit in Nairobi, Kenya this May— will be focused on generating mutually beneficial economic growth that can also create opportunities for Africa’s growing young population.

Beyond business, the gregarious entrepreneur has committed substantial resources to philanthropy. Through his Tony Elumelu Foundation, the businessman has impacted almost 25,000 young entrepreneurs across Africa. To mark his birthday this year, Elumelu wrote a cheque of $16 million to be shared among fresh 3,200 young entrepreneurs. This year’s cohort —selected across all 54 African countries— will each receive $5,000 in non-refundable seed capital, alongside access to mentorship, business training, and TEF’s proprietary digital platform, TEFConnect.

So far, Elumelu’s Foundation has now disbursed over $100 million in funding to nearly 25,000 entrepreneurs since its inception. Collectively, those entrepreneurs have generated over $4.2 billion in revenue, created 1.5 million jobs, and lifted more than 2.1 million Africans out of poverty, impacting over four million households across the continent. But beyond business and benevolence, Elumelu, as a man of means and immense influence, still exudes calmness and generosity of spirit. He has proven that you can make a fortune and still have a heart. The business titan has demonstrated that wealth isn’t just about numbers, but about impact. As he added a year, Elumelu, rather than throwing a lavish soiree, only expressed gratitude for a life full of impact and reminded all about real progress which is measured by the numbers of lives empowered and the opportunities created.
