Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), has called for renewed efforts to strengthen regional peace and unity among Nigeria, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the African Union.

Speaking at the Voice of Nigeria (VON) Forum 2026, Buratai emphasized Nigeria’s long-standing role as a pillar of stability in West Africa, urging deeper collaboration to address emerging security and political challenges in the region.

He described the Voice of Nigeria as “professional, independent, pan-African, progressive, and visionary,” commending the organization for amplifying African perspectives globally.

Buratai also paid tribute to late and retired media professionals, including Mohammed Okorejor and Ben Shamang, for their contributions to journalism and national development.

The retired General congratulated VON on its 51st anniversary, praising its leadership for sustaining excellence and innovation in broadcasting.

Highlighting Nigeria’s contributions to regional peacekeeping, Buratai noted the country’s involvement in ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone, as well as interventions in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.

“For 51 years, Nigeria has been the unshakable anchor of ECOWAS,” he said. “Our stability is inseparable from the security of our neighbours.”

He stressed the importance of synergy between ECOWAS and the African Union in promoting peace and integration across the continent, noting that democracy and collective security remain closely linked.

Buratai also called for the reintegration of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger into the regional bloc, warning that disunity could undermine progress in West Africa.

“The unity of ECOWAS cannot be complete without these nations,” he said. “Without unity, progress in the region may be a mirage.”

The former Army Chief urged stakeholders to strengthen regional institutions and uphold the legacy of ECOWAS through cooperation and shared commitment to peace.

The VON Forum 2026 brought together policymakers, media professionals, and regional stakeholders to discuss Africa’s role in global affairs and strategies for sustainable development.
