Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe on Monday inspected Jumbam and Kaliyari communities ravaged by devastating floods in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the governor had to use a helicopter to access the affected communities as all roads leading to them were destroyed by the floods.

Shortly after the aerial inspection, Buni directed the state’s Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Umar Dudaye, to immediately rehabilitate the road leading to the area.

He also directed the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to ensure that all victims of the disaster were given relief materials and those admitted in the hospital received free treatment.

“We have to act fast and smoothly, to restore life in these communities,” the governor said.”

Alhaji Mohammed Goje, SEMA Executive Secretary, confirmed that the death toll from Saturday’s boat mishap in the area had risen to 11.

He added that the flood, triggered by torrential rains, had destroyed 180 houses and washed off 752 hectares of farmlands.

NAN recalls that two passenger boats bound for Babbangida weekly market capsized in a flood wave in the area.(NAN)
