Ahead of the National Congress of the Nigerian Folklore Society (NFS), its long-serving president, Dr. Bukar Usman, has thrown in the towel.
In a letter addressed to the Congress of the Nigerian Folklore Society, entitled “Notice of Resignation”, dated August 3, 2026, and made available to Daily Sun, Usman said: “I, Dr. Bukar Usman, OON, hereby resign my post as President of the Nigerian Folklore Society (NFS) with immediate effect. I thank the Society and members for giving me the opportunity to serve in that capacity (2014-2016).” He gave no further reason for his resignation.

Before Usman took over in 2014, the association was dormant for ten years. Writing in Nigerian Folklore Society: The First 40 Years, edited by Sani Abba Aliyu and Duve Nakolisa, the authors said the April, 2013 conference of the association themed “Folklore, National Integration and Development”, held at Bayero University, Kano, led to its revival.
Usman was appointed to chair the 2013 NFS Revival Committee, with Prof. Olusegun Adesina Adekoya and Prof. Asabe Kabir Usman serving as Vice President 1 & 2. The Steering Committee, which was re-elected in 2014 and in 2016, was presented with 13 tasks as NFS’ Executive Committee it was required to accomplish, which they executed meritoriously.
