Brighton & Hove Albion produced a stunning comeback at Old Trafford on Wednesday, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Manchester United 3-2 and send them out of the EFL Cup in the third round.
United appeared in control after Scott Lacey opened the scoring in the eighth minute, before Mason Mount doubled their advantage just two minutes later to put the hosts 2-0 ahead.
Brighton refused to fold and pulled a goal back in first-half stoppage time through Charalampos Kostoulas, with Jaouen Hadjam providing the assist to give the visitors renewed hope before the break.
That momentum carried into the second half as Pascal Groß equalised for Brighton in the 65th minute, with Luka Vušković setting up the midfielder to make it 2-2.
Brighton completed the turnaround four minutes later when Maxim De Cuyper struck in the 69th minute, turning the tie on its head and putting the visitors ahead for the first time.
Manchester United pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but Brighton held firm despite five minutes of added time. Karl Darlow also produced a crucial save to deny Diego Gómez as the visitors threatened to extend their lead.
The defeat means United suffered an early exit from the EFL Cup, while Brighton advanced to the fourth round after completing one of the night’s notable comebacks.
The result was particularly striking because United had not lost at home after leading 2-0 since September 1976, when Tottenham overturned the same scoreline to win 3-2 at Old Trafford.
