Raging water hits Maiduguri, houses submerged, thousands displaced

From Timothy Olanrewaju, Maiduguri

A raging flood hit Maiduguri, the capital of northeast Borno State on Tuesday, displacing thousands of residents while many houses, vehicles and properties submerged in the water.

Residents said they saw water pushing forcefully from the Alao Dam in the eastern axis of the city early Monday and entered the metropolis by midnight.

Few residents were able to escape the rushing water as it pushed through the Gwange ward to GRA and got to the city centre.

The flood engulfed most parts of the city with residents watching helplessly as their houses were overrun by water. Already, the state government has opened a camp for displaced persons.

Last month, the hydrological agency issued a warning alert of flood following the release of water in Mali and Niger. Borno shares a border with Niger Republic.
