From Scholastica Hir, Makurdi

A middle aged man identified as Terhide Garfa has allegedly committed suicide at Kanshio community of Makurdi, the Benue state capital.

Gafa was found dead in a sitting position closed to a transformer at Kanshio area, at about 3:45 pm on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

A witness who identified himself simply as Nick, told newsmen in Makurdi that they are still wondering how he entered into the place since the transformer was fenced.

Nick, who resides in the area said, he was told that Gafa had, before carrying out the act, threatened to would commit suicide if he was not allowed to speak to his mother.

“Someone said that he heard him saying that he wanted to speak with his mother or he would kill himself but the person did not know if he was able to speak with his mother or not.

“At first they thought it to be a joke but few minutes later he was discovered dead. People saw his lifeless body close to the transformer,” he said.

Speaking to newsmen, the Head, Corporate Communications Jos Electricity Distribution Company, Dr Adakole Elijah described the incident as strange.

Elijah said that the transformer where the lifeless body of the man was found is fenced and he could not fathom the reason behind the deceased action.

He said, “We found it strange that a transformer that was fully fenced, somebody could enter into the place and we don’t know really what happened, whether it was a case of suicide or attempted vandalism.

“The pictorial evidence shows that the man forced himself into the transformer. JED has always warned people not to go close to it’s installations,” he said.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Benue State Command, SP Catherine Anene confirmed the incident saying the case was reported and investigation is on going to unravel the circumstances behind the man’s action.
