Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has shared his views on marriage and divorce, saying he believes ending an unhealthy union can sometimes be the best outcome for those involved.

Speaking during a recent appearance on The Morayo Show, Bovi said he sees divorce as a positive step when a marriage becomes emotionally draining or unbearable for either partner.

“I celebrate when people get divorced because I feel it means one or both people were not breathing well in the marriage. I will not suffer anybody, nor will I want anybody to suffer me.”

According to him, the end of a troubled marriage often signals that one or both individuals were no longer thriving in the relationship.

He stressed that he would never choose to remain in a situation that causes suffering, nor would he expect anyone else to do so.

Despite his support for divorce in certain circumstances, the comedian clarified that he is not dismissive of marriage. Bovi revealed that his own marriage of 17 years has come with its share of challenges and sacrifices.

Reflecting on his experience, he noted that maintaining a family has required consistent commitment, particularly in fulfilling his responsibilities as a provider since getting married at the age of 29.

“That is not to say my marriage has been easy for 17 years. It has not. I got married at 29. I have been providing for 17 years nonstop.”

Bovi also addressed societal expectations surrounding gender roles in marriage. While acknowledging the traditional belief that men should cater to the financial needs of their families.

He argued that women who are driven to contribute financially should be appreciated and such efforts deserve recognition and respect, especially when such contributions stem from her personal ambitions and aspirations.

“If a woman’s passion drives her to provide, her contributions should be recognised and respected.”
