Borno: Zulum opens N15.9bn flyover bridge, road

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has commissioned the N15.9 billion flyover bridge and road built within eleven months at the heart of Maiduguri, the state capital.

Zulum, while commissioning the flyover jointly with his Nasarawa State counterpart, Governor Abdullahi Sule, late Sunday, described the project as the fulfilment of his administration’s vision.

He said the facility was designed not as mere beautification of the city centre but to ease the incessant traffic congestion at the busy and crowded Post Office area of the state capital.

He said the flyover, roads and other projects executed by his administration were part of rebuilding efforts in Borno plagued by nearly two decades of terrorist violence.

“The journey of rebuilding Borno continues, and our commitment remains unwavering: to ensure that every child has access to quality education and the opportunity to build a productive and dignified future,” Zulum said.

He said the projects should be viewed within the broader context of the security challenges confronting the state and progress made in overcoming them.

“The insurgency destroyed more than 5,000 school structures, while at its peak, an estimated 2.2 million children were out of school, with fewer than 500,000 enrolled,” he explained.

The construction of the flyover bridge and road with a bus station/motor park and other facilities began mid-2025 and was completed about three months ago. The flyover is the fourth in the capital built by the Zulum administration.

Also, the governor unveiled the 2.5km Budum Junction-Kasuwan Shanu dual carriageway with drainage, a major network for the movement of cattle from the main livestock market to the highways leading to other parts of the country. He also commissioned Mega Primary and Junior Secondary School located at the easily accessible Customs Area.

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, who was the special guest of honour, said the projects demonstrated purposeful leadership of the Borno governor.

“I commend you for demonstrating that even in the face of enormous challenges, government must continue to invest in its people, particularly in the education of our children, and I commend you for this wonderful job that you are doing,” he said.
