Borno State Government has confirmed the escape of six former Boko Haram fighters from a holding facility where they were kept.
Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof Usman Tar, said the men were among the over 20,000 recently documented and profiled after surrendering under the Borno Model of Reconciliation, Peace-building and Development.
“The Borno State Government is fully aware of the incident and remains committed to collaborating with the relevant agencies to track and arrest the escapees,” Tar said in a statement yesterday.
About a dozen of the surrendered Boko Haram reportedly escaped from a rehabilitation centre with arms last week while social and economic activities were returning to the state following devastating floods.
But the commissioner maintained that the repentant insurgents escaped unarmed. He said the state government in collaboration with security agencies was already out to track down the escapee
He urged members of the public not to buy into the terrorists’ recent propaganda which celebrates the escapees with guns.
Over 90,000 Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), their families and associates have quitted the terror groups and surrendered to the government since 2021 according to the military.
