Borno State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Chairman Bishop Mohammed Naga has denied endorsing the selection of the former governor of the state, Sen Kashim Shettima as running-mate to the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Bishop Naga denied making any comment or granting an interview on the APC vice presidential candidate.
“I didn’t speak to any journalist, media outfit or even any social media user. I didn’t endorse or applaud any selection. The report is the fabrication of the reporters and the organisation to cause more tension among our people,” he told The Sun.
He said he was shocked and depressed when he read the report of his alleged applauding of Shettima’s selection. “I couldn’t have made comment so quickly on an issue which is of interest. That report was done in bad faith,” he declared.
Some youths said to be angered by the purported endorsement on Monday, threatened to protest at the CAN office, a move which was later aborted following the intervention of some Christian youth leaders.
CAN officials have been meeting since Monday noon amid fears of a possible sharp reaction from the youths.
