President Mohammadu Buhari has commissioned a trauma centre, Physical Rehabilitation Centre (PRC), auditorium and other health facilities at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) in Borno.
Buhari while performing the commissioning on Thursday in Maiduguri through virtual, said the facilities would improve health care delivery especially for victims of insurgency and other violence in the northeast.
‘The 150-bed trauma centre which is commissioned here in Maiduguri will really meet the challenges of the growing needs of healthcare delivery in the northeast. All these unprecedented landmark projects will go a long way in addressing the healthcare need of the region,’ he said.
UMTH Chief Medical Director Prof Ahmed Ahidjo said the Trauma Centre with modern equipment, would provide ‘the best all-round specialist’ trauma-related services.

‘It has separate neuro-Trauma Operating Theatre, Orthopedic Theatre, Vascular and General Surgical units and theatre. It is equipped with ICU, Radiology, laboratory, Pharmacy, e-Record section and a helipad for an emergency landing,’ he explained.
He said a Burnt Centre and Stroke Centre will soon be completed to provide other physical therapy in the hospital. He said the General Outpatient Department (GOPD) has been expanded from 800-bed capacity to 1200 bed capacity, the largest in the northeast.
He appealed to the president to increase medical and technical staff as well as allocations to the hospital to carter for the upgraded and new health services to be provided by the teaching hospital. He said such increase would help the hospital meet the needs of the people of the area.
Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, commended UMTH for “responding well” to the Coronavirus challenge and other health outbreak especially victims of Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast. He said the increasing population of patients led to overstretching of the facility in the hospital and resolved to upgrade the facility.
UMTH was established in 1982 but the hospital was officially commissioned on 23rd July 1983.
