Nigerian forward Victor Boniface has returned to the matchday squad after several months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Boniface was named among the substitutes in Bremen’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw away to on Sunday, marking his first involvement since undergoing knee surgery earlier this year.

Although he did not feature, his return to the squad is a significant boost for Bremen as the club battles to secure its Bundesliga status.

The 26-year-old has not played competitively since making a brief substitute appearance in a 3-2 defeat to Hamburg in December 2025.

A prolonged recovery period saw him return temporarily to parent club , where he completed part of his rehabilitation before rejoining Bremen in March.

Leverkusen sporting director said Boniface’s loan spell was designed to help him rediscover full fitness after an injury-hit period.

“In his first season he was unbelievable, and his second season was also good,” Rolfes said.

“But in his second season he had injury problems, and last summer we agreed he needed more training to get back into peak condition.”

With matches against Augsburg, Hoffenheim and Borussia Dortmund still to come, Boniface could yet play a role in Bremen’s final push for top-flight survival.
