Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to defeat Freiburg 2-1 in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with Nigerian striker Victor Boniface absent from the match.
Freiburg took the lead in the 14th minute through Derry Scherhant, who finished off a move assisted by Philipp Treu.
Leverkusen responded five minutes later as Ibrahim Maza scored in the 19th minute to restore parity before the hosts went into the break level at 1-1.
Patrik Schick then struck in the 76th minute, with Maza providing the assist, to complete Leverkusen’s comeback and secure all three points at the BayArena.
Despite enjoying slightly less possession than Freiburg, Leverkusen were more accurate in front of goal, registering five shots on target from 12 attempts. Freiburg managed only two shots on target from 11 attempts.
Boniface’s continued absence means the Nigerian forward was not involved in the victory, although the match statistics supplied do not establish the reason for his absence or when he might return.
The result gave Leverkusen a valuable Bundesliga victory, while Freiburg left the BayArena empty-handed.
