The Federal Government has admitted that inadequate gas supply to thermal power plants, alongside reduced hydroelectric output, is worsening electricity generation and contributing to recent power supply disruptions across parts of the country.
In a statement on Thursday, the Federal Ministry of Power, said preliminary assessments had linked the outages in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo states to a combination of maintenance and operational challenges across the power sector, declining gas supply to thermal plants and reduced output from hydroelectric stations.
The admission comes amid growing concerns over deteriorating electricity supply in parts of the country, including areas that had recently experienced improvements in power delivery.According to the ministry, lower water inflows into hydroelectric reservoirs have constrained output from hydropower stations, further compounding the shortfall in electricity generation caused by gas supply limitations. It, however, ruled out a major or systemic failure of the national grid, insisting that the disruptions were linked to operational issues within different segments of the electricity value chain. The statement added that the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, is working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and electricity distribution companies to address the constraints and accelerate the restoration of normal supply.

The ministry said Tegbe had engaged the relevant operators to fast-track ongoing maintenance, resolve operational bottlenecks and keep Nigerians informed as efforts to restore electricity supply progress.
It acknowledged the impact of the outages on households, businesses and public institutions, assuring consumers that the government was committed to improving the reliability and quality of electricity supply nationwide. The ministry also appealed for public patience and understanding, promising further updates on the restoration efforts.
