Residents of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, and its environs are set for an extended period of blackout following fresh destruction to the Ahoada- Yenagoa 132kV line by vandals.

Yenagoa had been thrown into darkness since July following the destruction of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) towers supplying light to communities in Rivers and Bayelsa State.

The affected towers include those at Igbogene, Okogbe in Ahoada East, Emezi in Ahoada, and Mbiama also in Ahaoda West all in Rivers.

The Bayelsa State government had fixed the towers in Igbogene and was collaborating with TCN engineers to fix the towers at the Ahoada axis. Earlier, November 6 had been fixed as the date for electricity to be restored but the repairs suffered a setback following the discovery of destroyed towers in the swamp.

Sunday Sun gathered that the TCN engineers had fixed the towers and were at the last stage of repairs before the latest attack by vandals.

A statement by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said vandals had disrupted the repair work at the Ahaoda- Yenagoa line. According to Mbah, preliminary investigations revealed that towers 29 to 31 were affected by the theft of light conductors by the vandals.

Consequently, TCN has arranged to deploy local security to the area to secure it until repairs are completed.
