The 9th Session of the Babcock International Model United Nations (BIMUN) Conference was not merely a gathering of young minds simulating the workings of the United Nations. It was a transformative experience that blended diplomacy, innovation, leadership, and creativity into a single platform designed to empower the next generation of global changemakers. Held from August 3 to 7, 2025, under the theme “UN@80 and the Pact for the Future: Youth as Changemakers in Global Governance,” the event placed youth at the center of conversations about leadership and solutions for a better world.
Model United Nations conferences are renowned for offering students the opportunity to practice diplomacy, debate, and international collaboration. Yet, BIMUN has steadily distinguished itself over the years by not only simulating UN activities but also weaving in an element of empowerment that challenges participants to think beyond theory and embrace practical leadership. The 9th edition reaffirmed this reputation by celebrating outstanding institutions and nurturing young innovators who are prepared to face real-world challenges.
One of the defining moments of the conference came during the awards ceremony, where nine schools were recognized with the Prestigious Institutional Excellence Award. This recognition was more than an accolade; it was an acknowledgment of the schools’ enduring commitment to nurturing students who display courage, discipline, and innovative thinking. The institutions honored included Babcock High School, Dority College, Igbobi High School, Ambassadors College, Corona High School, Christ the Redeemers College, Bethel American School, and Supreme Education Foundation School. Each school stood out for its teamwork and dedication to building students capable of engaging confidently in global discourse.
The award highlighted the important role of schools as incubators of leadership. It celebrated their behind-the-scenes work in preparing students not just for exams but for leadership roles in global governance, social innovation, and diplomacy. By recognizing all participating schools, BIMUN reinforced the principle that excellence is not solely measured by competition but also by collective effort and commitment to growth.
Beyond recognizing institutional excellence, BIMUN 2025 added another dimension to its program through the BEACON (Babcock Educational Advocacy Community Network) Pitch Competition. This initiative provided students with an avenue to move beyond diplomacy into entrepreneurship and problem-solving. It challenged them to identify educational challenges and propose innovative, practical solutions.
The pitch competition was both exciting and impactful. Delegates brought forward creative ideas that reflected not only their ingenuity but also their understanding of the realities facing education today. At the end of the contest, Supreme Education Foundation School clinched the top spot and a prize of ₦250,000, while Babcock University High School followed with ₦150,000, and Corona Schools Trust Council secured third place with ₦100,000. The prize money was not merely symbolic; it was designed to help the winning schools turn their visions into reality.
By including the pitch competition in its programming, BIMUN expanded its influence beyond the traditional boundaries of diplomacy and negotiation. It demonstrated a recognition that young people must be equipped not only to speak about global problems but also to create and implement tangible solutions. This innovative approach distinguished BIMUN as a platform where future leaders can be nurtured as diplomats, entrepreneurs, and changemakers.
