Beyond the showroom: Why after-sales support matters in car ownership

When Nigerians shop for a vehicle, attention naturally goes to price, fuel economy, performance, design, comfort and availability of spare parts. While these considerations are important, one question deserves equal attention: what happens after the vehicle leaves the showroom?

The true test of a vehicle often begins after purchase. It comes when the car requires routine servicing, develops a fault or suddenly breaks down. At such moments, the quality of after-sales support can determine whether ownership remains convenient or becomes frustrating and expensive.

A vehicle is a long-term investment, and its real cost goes beyond the purchase price. Owners must consider servicing, replacement parts, repairs and the financial consequences of downtime. A seemingly affordable vehicle can become costly if genuine parts are difficult to obtain, qualified technicians are unavailable or repairs take too long.

Even the most reliable vehicles require periodic maintenance. Buyers should therefore assess not only the quality of the vehicle but also the strength of the organisation standing behind it.

Before buying, motorists should find out whether the dealer has properly equipped workshops, trained technicians and adequate stocks of genuine spare parts. Warranty conditions should also be clearly explained, including what is covered, how long the warranty lasts and the procedures for making claims.

These issues are particularly important in Nigeria, where vehicles play an essential role in everyday life. Families rely on cars for commuting to work, school runs, appointments and other responsibilities. When a vehicle remains in a workshop for days, the disruption can be significant.

For businesses, downtime can be even more costly. Companies operating fleets for executives, sales teams, field workers or logistics operations need vehicles to remain productive. Fleet procurement decisions should therefore consider maintenance support and overall cost of ownership rather than concentrating solely on acquisition price.

Some automotive companies are beginning to place greater emphasis on structured after-sales support.

Carloha’s CarlohaCare 6-6-7 programme offers an example. The programme combines a six-year warranty, six years of free servicing and a seven-day repair promise, subject to applicable terms and conditions. CarlohaCare Rescue further extends support through roadside assistance.

Beyond the individual brand, initiatives of this nature highlight the standards consumers should increasingly demand across the automotive industry. As competition intensifies, after-sales support should become an important measure of the value and credibility of automotive brands operating in Nigeria.

Consumers must also ask tougher questions. Are genuine spare parts readily available? Is roadside assistance provided? How quickly are complaints resolved? What happens when repairs cannot be completed within a reasonable period?

Dealers should provide clear answers rather than rely on general promises of excellent customer service.

Ultimately, a good vehicle ownership experience depends on more than what happens in the showroom. It depends on the support available throughout the years that follow.

Nigeria’s automotive market will benefit when after-sales service becomes central to purchasing decisions.

So, before buying your next vehicle, don’t just ask what the car can do. Ask who will take care of it afterwards.

Buy the car. Demand the care.
