Benue uncovers over 4,000 substandard schools

Benue State Government said it has uncovered over 4,000 substandard and illegal schools across the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Tersoo Kula, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Makurdi, said the substandard schools would be shut down soon.

Kula, who was reacting to a statement credited to former Commissioner for Education, Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, said Governor Alia has stabilised the educational sector since coming on board two years ago.

Enumerating the achievements of the governor in the educational sector, Kula said the administration has stabilised the sector by stalling hitherto state-wide strike by teachers through negotiations and dialogue, adding that, 38 months of earned allowances of staff of Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, formerly, Benue State University, were also paid.  “The establishment of the University of Agriculture Ihugh in Vandeikya LGA of the State is real. Licence for the university and the lands have been acquired while principal officers have already been appointed.

“The essence of the specialised university is to address issue of providing admission for the teeming Benue indigenes seeking admission into higher institutions. “The governor has also employed over 9,700 teachers to energise public primary schools in the state. Apart from the fact that our primary schools would be energised, 9700 youths have been taken off the streets,” he said.
