Benue SUBEB advocates menstrual hygiene, education

The Executive Chairman of Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, has called on stakeholders in the education sector to ensure every child has the needed support to manage menstrual health hygiene.

A statement by the Information Officer, Benue SUBEB, Akese Emmanuella, quoted Adagba as making the appeal at an advocacy campaign organised for 100 girls selected from 10 schools to mark the World Menstrual Hygiene Day in Makurdi on Tuesday

The SUBEB boss represented by the Board Secretary, Dr. Joseph Jande, who presented menstrual kits to each of the students, said it was a shared responsibility of all stakeholders to support the girl child to overcome the stigma associated with menstruation.

She reiterated Governor Hyacinth Alia’s commitment in creating a supportive and inclusive environment through sharing accurate information in ensuring cultural shift from stigmatisation to open dialogue for womanhood.

Director, Social Mobilisation, SUBEB, Mrs. Erdoo Sar, said the event was put together to educate and empower the students with accurate information to manage their menstrual health and boost their confidence in schools.

In a presentation on effective menstrual hygiene practices, Head of Department, clinical psychology, Federal Medical Centre Makurdi, Dr. Perpetual Chia, stressed the need for people to always have a sincere conversation on menstruation which is a natural phenomenon in every woman and must not be seen as a secret cult.
