Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Benue State Police Command has brought together chairmen and representatives of political parties, candidates, sister security agencies and other stakeholders for the signing of a Peace Accord.
The engagement was aimed at promoting peaceful political activities and sustaining security across the state before, during and after the elections.
The engagement, held in Makurdi on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, provided an avenue for political actors and security stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to peaceful campaigns, respect for the rule of law and the protection of lives and property throughout the electoral period.
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, urged political party leaders and candidates to ensure that their supporters conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly.
Nwadiogbu specifically warned political actors against recruiting or using political thugs, cult groups and other criminal elements to intimidate opponents or disrupt lawful political activities.
He called on all candidates and their supporters to respect the rights of other political actors and resolve disagreements through lawful and peaceful means rather than resorting to violence.
The Commissioner said the Peace Accord was an important commitment by the participating political parties and candidates towards ensuring a peaceful electoral environment in the state.

The accord was subsequently signed by the participating political parties and candidates, signifying their commitment to reject political violence, respect the rights of other contestants and cooperate with security agencies throughout the electoral process.
Nwadiogbu assured political parties and candidates that the Police Command would remain professional and impartial in providing security for all lawful political activities.
He also urged stakeholders to maintain effective communication with the Police and other security agencies, particularly when planning rallies, campaigns and other major political events.
The Commissioner stressed the need for political actors to provide security agencies with adequate information on planned activities to enable effective security arrangements and prevent avoidable incidents.
The Command called on supporters of political parties, candidates and members of the public to uphold the spirit of the Peace Accord and refrain from acts capable of threatening public peace.
He urged all stakeholders to work collectively towards ensuring peaceful, orderly and credible political activities in Benue State.
