The Idoma Area Traditional Council on Wednesday suspended the conferment of chieftaincy titles across intermediate area councils in Idoma land, effective immediately.
The suspension was announced in a statement by Secretary of the Idoma Area Traditional Council, Adegbe Uloko, on behalf of the Och’Idoma Agaba-Idu, Dr. Elaigwu Odogbo John, President of the Idoma Area Traditional Council and Vice Chairman, Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers.
The suspension affected Intermediate Area Councils in Apa/Agatu, Otukpo/Ohimini, Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo and Oju/Obi.

According to the statement, the suspension is aimed at regulating and safeguarding the conferment of titles, preventing indiscriminate proliferation and preserving the sanctity of the traditional institution.
The statement warned that any chieftaincy title conferred in contravention of this declaration shall be deemed null, void and of no effect. “Defaulters may be subjected to further traditional and legal sanctions.
The Idoma Traditional Council also reaffirms its commitment to protecting the integrity and heritage of chieftaincy titles in Idoma land. “The conferment of titles shall continue to reflect honour, service and cultural value, and will only be carried out under lawful authority and due process.
“The suspension is based on Part II Section 7 (d) of the Chieftaincy Law of 2016 (as amended), which stipulates that all conferment of chieftaincy titles must receive prior approval from the paramount ruler and the respective Area Traditional Council,” the statement added.
