From Scholastica Hirs, Makurdi
The Executive Chairman, Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, has emphasised the need to foster a harmonious relationship with the police, amid the incessant challenges of theft, vandalism and other security breaches plaguing public schools.
Adagba spoke when he visited the Commissioner of Police, Steve Yabanet, at the Police headquarters, Makurdi.
She said the visit was to establish a collaborative effort between SUBEB and the frontline security agency to bolster security measures in Basic Education Schools across the state.
She cited a recent incident in Makurdi, where there was an attempted abduction of school children, underscoring the urgent need for ensuring the safety of learners, teachers, and school property.
In response, CP Yabanet acknowledged the existing synergy between the Force and the schools, particularly through initiatives like the safe schools programme.
He encouraged school administrators to maintain close communication with security agencies, ensuring they have access to emergency contact numbers of law enforcement agents within their vicinity. This proactive approach, he emphasised, would facilitate prompt response to security incidents, thereby fostering a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Highlighting the effectiveness of such collaborations, Yabanet shared a recent success story where the police thwarted an attempted kidnap at a school in Makurdi, underscoring the importance of continuous cooperation between SUBEB and the law enforcement agencies.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to a robust partnership aimed at safeguarding schools and preserving the well-being of learners and staff. As they look forward to working hand in hand, the collaboration holds promise for ensuring a seamless educational environment, where security concerns are effectively addressed.
