A former councillor of Awume-Icho Ward in Ohimini Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, Daniel Ujah, has been remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre for allegedly torturing, assaulting and attempting to kill an elderly woman.
Ujah, 43, was arraigned before the Upper Area Court 2, Otukpo, on a First Information Report (FIR) marked CR33/2026, filed by the Nigeria Police.
The police accused him of criminal trespass, intimidation, use of criminal force and assault, causing grievous hurt, and attempting to commit culpable homicide.
According to the FIR, the case followed a petition by Rebecca Adole, who reported that Ujah allegedly trespassed into her mother, Amina Iduh’s compound in Akwutolo Awume village on August 28.
The report alleged that Ujah beat the woman several times and pushed her into a fire, causing injuries to her body, while her clothes were also burnt.
It further alleged that the victim was subsequently taken to a hospital in Onyangede, Ohimini LGA, for treatment.

The police also alleged that Ujah threatened that if he killed the woman, nobody could stop him.
When the matter came up on Wednesday before His Worship Hasia Garuba for mention, Ujah pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
Defence counsel, Rev. O. Simon, who held brief for P.O. Ella, applied for bail on behalf of the defendant.
However, the prosecuting counsel, Inspector Nancy Alechenu, opposed the bail application.
In her ruling, Magistrate Garuba ordered that Ujah be remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
The matter was adjourned to September 22 for further mention.
