The Benue Children Parliament has called on governments at all levels as well as non governmental organizations to take drastic steps to stop the rising wave of sexual assault on the girl child.
The children parliamentarians made the call at the inaugural session of the Benue Children parliament organized by ‘Save the Children’ International held at Hallydays Hotels, Makurdi the state capital on Sunday.
They lamented the prevalent rate of sexual assaults on the girl child blaming the development on the indecent manner in which some young people dress these days.
They however noted that rather than dwell on blame game, parents should rise up to the responsibility of discouraging immoral dressing amongst young people especially the girl child.
The young parliamentarians also appealed to government and non governmental organizations to embark on sensitization at the rural areas to stem the tide of sexual abuse.
“Parents should guide what their children view especially on social media. Victims should learn to speak out and government should make stringent laws on perpetrators”, the parliament resolved.
On his part, Field Manager, Save the Children International, Mrs.Oluseyi Abejide explained that the organization is, among other things, interested in ensuring the protection of children.
She further maintained that the Organization has continued to intervene in other areas and is currently working with Internally Displaced persons (IDPs) in the State.
Also speaking, State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Tabitha Igirgir enjoined the children to seize the opportunity given to them to speak out against child sexual molestation.
