Benson Idahosa University tops as NUGA 2025 ends

Benson Idahosa University (BIU) topped the medal table as the 27th edition of the Nigeria University Games (NUGA 2025) came to a close in Jos on Saturday.

The university garnered an impressive 23 gold, six silver and three bronze medals followed by the host, the University of Jos, which came second with 18 gold, 15 silver and 17 bronze medals, while the University of Benin secured third place with 15 gold, nine silver and 10 bronze medals.

Twelve universities did not win any gold while Usmanu Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, won only one bronze medal.

The ceremony drew a cream of distinguished guests, amongst whom were the Emir of Zuru, Mohammad Sanusi Mikailu Sami Gamo III, the Ujah Anaguta HRH Pozoh Johnson Jauro Magaji, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Mrs Josephine Chundung Piyo, and Prof. Tanko Ishaya, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos.

For coming tops, Benson Idahosa University earned ₦2 million in prize money. The host University of Jos followed with 18 gold and 50 medals, receiving ₦1.5 million, while the University of Benin secured third place with 15 gold and 34 medals, taking home ₦1 million.

A total 22 sports were competed in 207 events with swimming recording 30 events, judo recording 17 events, karate 16, boxing recording 15 events. Handball and hockey recorded the lowest with two events.

Other sports recorded were scrabble, eight, cricket, six, squash, seven, tennis, five.

A total of 207 gold medals, 196 silver and 272 bronze medals were won at the events.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Tanko Ishaya, lauded the orderly conduct of the athletes and the university community at large.
