Archbishop Margaret Benson-Idahosa of the Church of God Mission International (CGMI) has donated a solar-powered borehole to the Oko Correctional Centre in Benin City, Edo State, to ease water shortage and improve the welfare of more than 1,500 inmates and staff.
Benson-Idahosa, represented by Wale Ajayi, inaugurated the project on Thursday as part of activities marking her 83rd birthday, saying the intervention was designed to address the facility’s water needs.
Ajayi said the gesture reflected Benson-Idahosa’s commitment to supporting institutions and improving the wellbeing of vulnerable members of society.
Speaking at the inauguration, Assistant Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Zonal Headquarters, Zone G, Mosue Oizuajemen, described the intervention as timely, saying inadequate water supply had remained a major challenge at the centre.
Oizuajemen attributed the problem partly to the high cost of diesel and fuel required to power water pumps as well as irregular electricity supply, which had made it difficult to maintain consistent water supply.

She expressed optimism that the solar-powered system would provide a more dependable source of power for pumping water and significantly improve conditions at the facility.
According to her, the centre accommodates more than 1,500 inmates who, alongside personnel, would benefit from the intervention.
Oizuajemen commended Benson-Idahosa for her continued support to the correctional service, recalling that she had previously provided borehole water to the facility.
She said the latest intervention further demonstrated Benson-Idahosa’s commitment to the welfare of inmates and staff.
The Nigerian Correctional Service expressed appreciation for the donation, saying the solar-powered borehole would significantly improve water availability at the centre.
