- Govt pleads for level-playing ground
Ahead of the March 18 House of Assembly election, Governor Douye Diri has charged members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to ensure the party wins all 24 seats in the state.
Currently, the PDP has 20 seats while the All Progressive Congress (APC) which initially had five seats is now occupying four seats.
Diri, who has been in high spirits since the party won the presidential election and seven out of the eight seats in the National Assembly, with one outstanding seat inconclusive, in a meeting charged all appointees and stakeholders of the PDP to work hard for the total victory of the party in this weekend’s State House of Assembly election.
He mandated all PDP members to relocate to their constituencies and work hard for the victory of all PDP candidates.
“We all did it in the National Assembly elections where we recorded 100 per cent success. This Saturday, we go again and we will all ensure the victory of all our 24 state House of Assembly candidates.
“I urge you all to shun any form of betrayal, acrimony, and vengefulness. Let’s all sheath our swords, forgive one another and ensure the party’s victory in all constituencies during this week’s state elections.
“I thank you all for all your genuine efforts in the last Presidential and National Assembly elections, which brought us unprecedented victory, I charge you to do the same this weekend. Thank you and God bless you all,” he said.
The Minister of State, Petroleum and leader of the APC in Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva, in a final push to shore up support for the APC has relocated to Bayelsa to galvanise support for the party in the House of Assembly election.
Sylva’s action became necessary considering the poor performance of the party in the national assembly election where it lost the Bayelsa East senatorial district and the Nembe/ Brass Federal Constituency.
The party it was learnt was pained that all its projections for the national assembly seats failed and has moved to bounce back by winning an appreciable number of seats in the House of Assembly.
Since his arrival, Sylva was said to have met several stakeholders and strategies have been mapped out to convince the people to win.
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State government has called for a level praying ground for all political parties and their candidates in Saturday’s election to ensure a peaceful election/
The deputy- governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo who stated this during a meeting with Nembe City Council of Chiefs at the Government House, Yenagoa said the purpose of the meeting is to promote pace.
Ewhrudjakpo in the meeting which had in attendance all the service commanders in the state urged them to give maximum cooperation to security agencies for sustainable peace in the area.
Speaking, the alternate Chairman of the Nembe City Council of Chiefs, Chief Bright Erewari-Igbeta, noted that the recent peaceful election was achieved through the signing and adherence to a peace accord by the candidates of the various political parties.
