Bayelsa: PDP opens new secretariat, elects new chairman

From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa

A large crowd of members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa trooped out to witness the commissioning of its new secretariat and the election of a new chairman.

This is even as the party has vowed to work hard and reclaim the Bayelsa State Government House in the 2027 elections.

The acting chairman of the caretaker committee, George Turnah, who performed the commissioning of the new secretariat located at Isaac Boro Expressway, Yenagoa, commended the national leader of the party, former governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the national secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the national vice chairman, South-South, Chief Dan Osi Orbih, for their support to the PDP in the state.

According to him, the opening of the new secretariat signals the beginning of a new dawn for the PDP in Bayelsa State.

Turnah, who was later elected as the substantive chairman in the State Elective Congress through an affirmation vote by delegates across the eight local government areas, vowed that the PDP would reclaim Bayelsa in 2027.

Speaking in his post-victory remarks, he noted that Bayelsans and Ijaw people would reciprocate the goodwill the PDP had given to Bayelsans in the past.

Turnah encouraged members of the party not to be swayed by the tag of the opposition party being ascribed to the party, stressing that PDP remains the majority party in Bayelsa.

He promised that the State Working Committee he is leading would not betray the confidence reposed in it by the people, adding that they would work assiduously for the good of the party.

“PDP is Bayelsa, Bayelsa is PDP. Don’t be deceived by what seems to suggest that the PDP is now an opposition party in Bayelsa. This is theoretical; what is practical is that PDP is the majority party in Bayelsa State, and at the right time, the people of Bayelsa State, the Ijaw people, will reciprocate as we have always done to appreciate this party that has given to the Ijaw man everything we would have ever asked for in Nigeria.

“We are not ungrateful, and we will stand by this party. Even when human machinations failed the PDP in Bayelsa, God has always intervened. The God that intervened on behalf of PDP in 2019 in Bayelsa is still the same today. He still sits up above and still rules in the affairs of men. In 2027, PDP will not only make a strong statement through the ballot but will also deliver to the expectations of the world. PDP will reclaim the Bayelsa Government House.”

Also elected were Tony Gabriel, Vice-Chairman; Ato Alfreder Ebibofayei, Secretary; Erempagamo Eke-Spiff, Financial Secretary, among others.
