Bauchi Assembly approves proposed constitutional amendment for state police

From Paul Orude, Bauchi

The Bauchi State House of Assembly has endorsed recommendations for the proposed amendment of the 1999 Constitution to pave the way for the establishment of state police.

The resolution was presented during Wednesday’s plenary by the Deputy Speaker and interim Chairman of the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, Jamilu Ummaru.

Ummaru said the proposed reform would strengthen Nigeria’s security system by allowing state governments to establish their own police services to support the existing federal policing structure.

He explained that the amendment was intended to create the necessary constitutional backing for states to operate their respective police forces as part of broader efforts to tackle the country’s growing security challenges.

According to him, the Assembly’s decision represented its position on the proposed constitutional reform and constituted part of the constitutional procedure required to amend the 1999 Constitution.

The approval followed deliberations on the proposed amendment forwarded to state legislatures for consideration, in accordance with the constitutional requirements for amending the nation’s supreme law.
