Barcelona have entered the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri, launching a late attempt to hijack Real Madrid’s pursuit of the 2026 World Cup winner, talkSPORT reports.
It is understood that the Catalan club have contacted Rodri’s representatives as they look to strengthen their midfield.
RMC Sport journalist, Fabrice Hawkins reported in July that Real Madrid had reached a verbal agreement with the Spain World Cup winning captain.
Barcelona’s move comes after Frenkie de Jong suffered a knee injury at the World Cup which could keep him out for the rest of 2026.
Rodri, 30, has just one year left on his Manchester City contract, which has turned him into a major market opportunity for Europe’s elite, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

From a Barcelona perspective, the World Cup Golden Ball winner would fill a role the club has not replaced since Sergio Busquets left.
His unmatched tactical discipline, physical dominance, and elite ball-retention skills are seen as key to Hansi Flick’s push for the Champions League.
However, Rodri, whose family hails from Madrid, is understood to favour a return to his hometown.
While Real Madrid remain in pole position, Barcelona’s late push means the race for the Ballon d’Or winner is far from over.
