Wema Bank reaffirmed their dominance at the Nigeria Bankers Games, securing the overall championship for the third consecutive year after a decisive Week 6 performance. Though, First Bank and Sterling Bank were strong contenders through Week 5, the defending champions surged ahead by claiming nine gold medals to retain their crown.
A major boost came from the Wema Bank women’s volleyball team, who clinched gold, while the athletics squad delivered a commanding display by winning four gold medals. Star sprinter Adewumi Oluwaseun emerged as the standout performer of the tournament, claiming three individual gold medals and earning the title of Overall Best Athlete. With these victories, Wema Bank closed the competition as four-time back-to-back champions.
In a gripping finale to the 2025 football event, UBA edged past FCMB on Sunday to secure the gold medal in a tightly contested match that lived up to its billing. The clash featured the tournament’s best defensive side, UBA — who had not conceded throughout the competition — facing FCMB, the highest-scoring team.
The decisive moment arrived in the 20th minute when Amad Umar produced a moment of brilliance, lifting the ball over the FCMB goalkeeper for the game’s lone goal. From then on, UBA’s trademark defensive discipline took over.
