Bankers Games: Wema bank emerges overall winners

Wema Bank reaffirmed their dominance at the Nigeria Bankers Games, securing the overall championship for the third consecutive year after a decisive Week 6 performance. Though, First Bank and Sterling Bank were strong contenders through Week 5, the defending champions surged ahead by claiming nine gold medals to retain their crown.

A major boost came from the Wema Bank women’s volleyball team, who clinched gold, while the athletics squad delivered a commanding display by winning four gold medals. Star sprinter Adewumi Oluwaseun emerged as the standout performer of the tournament, claiming three individual gold medals and earning the title of Overall Best Athlete. With these victories, Wema Bank closed the competition as four-time back-to-back champions.

In a gripping finale to the 2025 football event, UBA edged past FCMB on Sunday to secure the gold medal in a tightly contested match that lived up to its billing. The clash featured the tournament’s best defensive side, UBA — who had not conceded throughout the competition — facing FCMB, the highest-scoring team.

The decisive moment arrived in the 20th minute when Amad Umar produced a moment of brilliance, lifting the ball over the FCMB goalkeeper for the game’s lone goal. From then on, UBA’s trademark defensive discipline took over.

Captain Mujeed Azeez marshaled UBA’s backline to perfection, neutralizing FCMB’s attacking threats, including midfielder Macvey Ubong and tournament top scorer Abubakar Shafi. Their 1–0 victory secured UBA’s seventh football title, achieved remarkably without conceding a single goal — a historic feat.

The atmosphere was further energized by strong corporate support from the stands. FCMB Managing Director Yemisi Edun cheered passionately for her team, while the Access Bank MD made a symbolic appearance on the bench during the women’s final, a gesture that drew admiration from spectators.

In the bronze-medal match, Sterling Bank defeated Wema Bank to finish third.

The women’s football final delivered another thrilling spectacle as Sterling Bank and Access Bank battled fiercely. With the match appearing destined for a penalty shootout, the Sterling Jet Queens found a late breakthrough to clinch their first-ever football title. Access Bank settled for silver, while defending champions First Bank claimed bronze after a win over FCMB.
