The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd) said the abductors of the Oyo schoolchildren are using them as human shields, threatening to kill their victims if troops advance on their position.

The minister made the disclosure on Wednesday on a News Central current affairs programme.

Musa further disclosed that the abductors were using their victims as bargaining chips to secure the release of some of their commanders currently held by the military.

“For whatever reason, they are looking for leverage because we have some of their commanders with us, and they feel taking these kids and holding them to ransom will make us release their commander.

“Now they’re threatening that if we move any closer to take action against them, they’re going to kill all the kids,” the minister said.

Daily Sun recalls that 46 pupils and teachers were abducted from three schools in Yawota and Esiele in Oriire local government area of Oyo State on May 15.
