The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, has been described as “one of Kebbi State’s and Nigeria’s most prominent and effective leaders. He is seen widely as Kebbi’s finest export, a figure whose influence in local and regional politics is as unmistakable as a star player’s impact on a top football club. He is, to Kebbi politics, what a Messi is to Bacelona FC at its prime.”
The encomium was poured on Bagudu by a public affairs analyst, Mr Lukman Sheriff, who said: “Central to Bagudu’s reputation in the politics of Nigeria is raw competence. Colleagues and constituents alike trust his ability to lead and deliver, believing that when he is at the helm, outcomes improve and difficult challenges are managed with steadiness and purpose.
“Currently serving as Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Bagudu has added national fiscal stewardship to a résumé already marked by grassroots politics, governance and legislative experience. His relevance in the scheme of things in Nigeria and a result-oriented tenure in public office has reinforced a perception of him as progressive, forward-looking and committed to achieving targets and making measurable progress.
“His successes at all the levels he has served quickly resonated with Nigerians such that many people noticed his command of policy and rhetoric. Whether addressing economic strategy or local development, Bagudu communicates with clarity, depth and conviction – attributes that enhance his capacity to set realistic targets and pursue them tenaciously.
“Throughout his career, he has been assertive in protecting both the interests of Kebbi’s citizens and broader national priorities. Those who have yet to hear him speak are often struck by his ability to synthesize complex issues into actionable proposals. His knack to make difficult tasks look ordinary marked him out as a problem solver.
“Bagudu’s public life includes roles as senator, two-term governor of Kebbi State (2015–2023) and now federal minister. Across these positions, he has cultivated a reputation for candor and foresight that has won him supporters across political and professional divides.
“As senator and as a bridge builder, Bagudu allied with technocrats and policy-minded leaders to advance economic reforms. His role often involved quiet coordination and strategic planning rather than public showmanship, contributing to policy debates and legislative initiatives.

“As governor, he steered Kebbi through a period focused on restoration, stability and inclusive development. Faced with limited resources and structural challenges, his administration prioritized projects aimed at equitable growth across agriculture, infrastructure and social services.
“Bagudu played an active, sometimes decisive, role in national election campaigns, including supporting Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential bid. As chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, it became his lot to galvanize and inspire actionable political strategy to nationalize the support base of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He did that with distinction through dint of hardwork and being part of a robust campaign effort which took him to all the election venues across the length and breadth of the country. His contributions during campaigns were simply awesome. His political engagement reflected both tactical acumen and a commitment to issues-based politics that helped deliver electoral success.
“An economist by training, he has been credited with contributing to strategies that shape both political outcomes and economic policy reforms in line with the Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tough but inescapable reform agenda. Colleagues describe him as a pragmatic thinker who prefers substantive contribution over public acclaim.
“Those closest to him call Bagudu an unsung contributor – modest, media-shy and focused on impact rather than publicity. He rarely seeks limelight; instead, he measures success by whether his interventions advance the public good.
“Critics and supporters alike have sometimes misunderstood or underestimated him. Yet Bagudu’s steady focus remains on making durable contributions that strengthen institutions and improve living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.
“Beyond office and party lines, Bagudu’s work reflects an enduring commitment to Kebbi’s development and to Nigeria’s broader economic resilience. His blend of technical knowledge, political experience and quiet determination continues to shape his public service.”
Sheriff concluded that looking ahead, Bagudu’s role at the federal level positions him to influence budgetary priorities and economic planning at a critical time. “Observers will be watching how his leadership translates into concrete policies that address fiscal discipline, inclusive growth and long-term development goals.”
